How it begins

There are days when everything looks ordinary—the streets are quiet, people hurry about their business, and the wind carries only dust and the smell of baking bread. It was on just such an ordinary day that Ali Baba set out from home, a small hatchet slung over his shoulder, humming a tune his mother had taught him. He did not yet know that before the sun could hide behind the hills, he would discover a secret that others had only heard of in travelers' tales. When the sun was just beginning to turn the sand the color of honey, Ali Baba went to the nearby forest. He walked along cheerfully, whistling, until suddenly he heard the thunder of hooves. "Someone's coming," he whispered, and quickly hid behind a big rock. A moment later, he saw an extraordinary sight: forty riders in dark cloaks stopped in front of a steep wall of rock. Their captain jumped down from his horse, walked up to the rock, and said in a booming voice: "Open, Sesame!" To Ali Baba's great astonishment, the rock slowly slid open, as if it were a door. The robbers led their horses inside and disappeared into the darkness. After a moment, the rock closed again and looked once more like an ordinary wall. The boy waited a very long time, until at last the riders came out and rode away into the distance. His heart was pounding like a drum. "I wonder what's in there…" he whispered. He walked up hesitantly and repeated: "Open, Sesame." And… the rock really opened! Ali Baba took a step inside and sat right down in amazement. In the cave stood chests full of gold coins, sparkling gems, colorful carpets, and silver dishes. "Oh… so much treasure!" he whispered. But he was not greedy. He took only a small pouch of coins—no more than he could hold in his hands. "This will help my mother," he said. "The rest can stay here." When he came home, his mother was very surprised. "Where did you get that?" Ali Baba told her the whole story. His mother was silent for a moment, and then she said: "Remember, my boy. The greatest treasure is not gold, but a good heart. If someone ever needs help, use this money wisely." Ali Baba promised that he would do just that. But he did not know that one of the robbers had seen his footprints by the rock. The robber captain grew very angry. "Someone has discovered our secret!" he shouted. "We must find out who!" The robbers decided to find the boy in the town. They disguised themselves as merchants and began going from house to house, questioning people. Meanwhile, Ali Baba lived with his mother and a clever girl named Morgiana, who helped them around the house. Morgiana was very observant, and she quickly noticed a suspicious number of strangers hanging around the street. One evening, she saw one of the "merchants" secretly marking the door of their house with chalk. This is certainly no accident, she thought. When night fell, Morgiana took a piece of chalk and marked, in exactly the same way… every door on the whole street. The next morning, the robbers came back and stood there helpless. "Which house is it?!" they whispered nervously. Their plan had failed. The robber captain decided to try once more. This time, he came to town with huge jars, saying that he was selling oil. In truth, robbers were hiding in most of the jars. "I'll stay here for the night," he said politely to Ali Baba's mother. "Tomorrow I'll be on my way." Ali Baba's mother, who was very welcoming, agreed. That evening, Morgiana heard a soft whisper coming from the jars: "Is it time yet?" The girl understood at once that something was wrong. But she was not frightened. She quickly came up with a plan. She went to fetch the town guards and quietly told them everything. When the robber captain gave the signal to his men, the guards were already waiting. The robbers were caught and led away by the guards, and the townspeople talked for a long time about the courage of clever Morgiana. Ali Baba thanked the girl and said: "You saved us all. From today on, you are part of our family." Some of the treasure from the cave was later given to the town to build wells, a school, and a marketplace where merchants could trade honestly. People often asked Ali Baba: "Why didn't you keep all the treasure for yourself?" And he would smile and answer: "Because the greatest treasure is not what we keep in a chest, but how much good we can do for others." And so Ali Baba, his mother, and Morgiana lived happily ever after, and for many years the children of the town played at "Open, Sesame!" and pretended to be explorers of mysterious caves—though everyone knew that the truest treasures are hidden not in rocks, but in courage, kindness, and a good heart.
