Thomas Trunkmuddle the elephant has everything an elephant should have-except a memory-and even a knot in his trunk can't help him remember what he was supposed to remember.

There once was an elephant, big—as an elephant.
His name was Thomas Trunkmuddle.
Everything he had was elephant-sized!
But his memory? One big muddle.
He had an elephant head,
And elephant feet,
And tusks of real elephant ivory—neat!
And a trunk that he twirled like a ribbon, with flair—
Everything elephant—but memory? Not there!
He invited his friends—all elephants—for cards,
At half past three, at his place.
They come, and they trumpet: "Hello there, dear friend!"
No answer. No sound. Not a trace.
No Trunkmuddle around!
He forgot! He went out!
He was due at the Crocodiles', no doubt,
For a cup of Nile water, cool and clear:
He forgot! He didn't appear!…
